The design of this home, located in Anacortes, WA, was influenced by its close proximity to Puget Sound and by the owner’s interest in the home styles along the Maine Coast. This has led us to design a home that has similar style and characteristics to those homes, as the Maine Coast and the San Juan Islands have many similar landscape and nautical characteristics.
The house, with the wonderful views of Puget Sound and the San Juans, was designed with many windows to capture the view, breeze, and daylight. Capturing the daylight is very important, especially during the darker winter months. The house has a classic, traditional design style which is very appropriate for its coastal location.
Watching the beautiful sunsets and the San Juan Island ferries coming and going across the Sound, will be a visual and relaxing delight for the owners and their guests. The living room, the kitchen, and dining areas are oriented to the views of Puget Sound. These areas access the rear lower porch and upper porch and are perfect for entertaining and enjoying the view.
The home has 3 covered porches, 2 of which have nice views of Puget Sound. The window, porch, and roof styles are reminiscent of homes along the Maine Coast, yet there are many Northwest influences as well. The living areas are visually and spatially connected and the painted interior wood trim and white oak flooring help create a warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere, especially during the long, dark days during the wintertime. The house has been extremely well received by neighbors and people passing by the home.
